■ Desert oak is a medium-sized, slow-growing tree found in the dry desert .

■ It is in the regions of Northern Territory, South Australia and Western Australia.

■ The Anangu peoples know the tree as kurkara.

Answer:

1. At a glance it looks like a type of casuarinas (a tree with slender) with it's spongy bark and needle like phyllodes (a winged leaf stalk which function as a leaf) but the flowers and seedpods show its true colours.
2. Desert Oak timber is closed grained, heavy and very hard once dry.
3. The timber appears fairly stable while air drying but will still split slightly if left in the round.
