The Miracle Worker is a play that dramatizes the life of Helen Keller. Act I introduces us to the Keller family and the main character Helen and the process by which she learns.

  • Helen is born to Kate Keller after a difficult birth. It is only after she is born that we realize that she is not only blind but also deaf and because of these two disabilities she will not be able to learn how to speak.
  • Helen grows up to be a very quiet and reclusive child however she is very cautious and reactionary to everything that happens around her. Because she is blind and deaf everything around her becomes frightening and she has no idea how to communicate her feelings. So much so that when a dog bites her, she begins biting herself thinking that's the normal thing to do.
  • The act continues to lay out the fear that everyone has of Helen when it comes to her growth. They believe that she is possessed and that she is not capable of living a normal life. The fact that Helen has such outbursts does not make it easy.
  • This act also introduces us to Annie, the titular Miracle worker who agrees to help her learn. It is not an easy journey as Helen still has her outbursts such as one that leads to her getting her tooth knocked out. However, Annie believes that Helen is smart and that she can help her.
