Two causes of the pitiable condition of the peasants of Assam during the British Rule were the following;
(i) Wasteland Rules: Under the Wasteland Rule in 1838 the local Indians were unable to start any form of plantation. Through this, the British were the only planters and employed the locals as farmers.
(ii) Import of Labour: The labour was being imported from central India to Assam. The labour was Indian but the locals were unable to earn anything.
These two aspects caused the downfall of the people of Assam.

Answer: Two causes of pitiable condition of the peasant of Assam during the British rule were:
Explanation: Firstly, British company government reclaimed vast area of land from the peasant with minimum pay or without paying anything. This land was giving to the European tea planters. Thus, the peasants of Assam were widely resented.
Secondly, the British government did not take any measures for the development of agriculture. As such whenever the climate was unfavourable agriculture suffered and the common people of Assam had to face famines continuously.
