The peripheral nervous system can be divided into two major components: sensory and motor. One way to think of these components is by the flow of information.
In the case of the sensory components, information flows from sensory receptors, inward through sensory nerves and ganglia, into the central nervous system (the brain and spinal cord). This inward information flow is afferent. The sensory receptors are at the surface of the body and inside the body.
The motor information flows in the opposite direction, from the central nervous system, through nerves, to effectors such as muscles. This outward information flow is efferent. The motor component can be further divided to the somatic and visceral motor components.
Somatic motor components are nerves that control striated muscle, which are under voluntary control. For example, when you are typing, you are using your somatic motor components.
Visceral motor components are a little more complex; they cover smooth muscle, cardiac muscle, and glands. The visceral components include the sympathetic nerves (“Fight or flight”), parasympathetic nerves (“Rest and digest”), and enteric (digestive system) nerves.
