In the 1977 Lok Sabha election, Congress lost its power to rule India after it got its independence, for the very first time. After India’s Prime Minister Indira Gandhi declared ‘The Emergency’ where many civil liberties got suspended, the leading lady of Congress government faced unpopularity and setback during elections.

This move also led to four parties join hands against Congress and formed another party named Janata alliance.
