Dynamo is a machine which converts mechanical energy to electrical energy. It works by rotating coils of copper in a magnetic field.

To rotate the dynamo there must be a mechanical energy.we can rotate the dynamo by wind energy, potential energy of water(hydro power) or we can use diesel or petrol engines.

The combination of dynamo and the engine which provides energy for the rotation of dynamo is called a generator.

The generator has an engine(diesel or petrol) and a dynamo which converts the mechanical energy of the engine into electrical energy.

Here you can see a generator which consists of an engine(green colour one on the leftside) and the dynamo(right side blue one). Both dynamo and engine together is called a generator.

Note:An AC Generator is called Alternator and A DC Generator is called Dynamo.

Thank you.
