During Inelastic collision The Mechanical energy is not conserved... since the colliding objects donot regain their Own Shapes... Some ammount of energy Lost due to the change in configuration of the objects . But in case of elastic collision.. the net mechanical energy remains conserved.
In elastic collision. the ratio of velocity of separation to that of velocity of approach is always 1. But in inelastic collision This Ratio is always less than 1.
