PLASTIC

Thermoplastics and thermosetting plastics are two separate classes of polymers, which are differentiated based on their behavior in the presence of heat. The material difference between the two is that thermoplastics can be remelted, while thermoset plastics remain in a permanent solid state once hardened. As a result of these physical qualities, thermoplastic materials have low melting points while thermoset plastic products can withstand high temperatures without losing austerity.

Hey !!

THERMOSETTING POLYMERS

  • On heating they undergo excessive cross linking and become hard.
  • These polymers cannot be remoulded or reshaped.
  • These are more brittle and insoluble in organic solvents.
  • These are formed by condensation polymerisation.
  • These polymers have three dimensional cross-linked structures.
  • Examples :- Bakelite , Terylene , Urea - formaldehyde, etc

THERMOPLASTIC POLYMERS

  • These polymers soften on heating and harden on cooling.
  • These polymers can be remoulded, recast and reshaped.
  • These are less brittle and soluble in some organic solvents.
  • These are formed by addition polymerisation.
  • These polymers have usually linear structures.
  • Examples :- PVC , teflon , nylon , Polyethylene, etc
