Write two different between xylem and phloem
Answers
Xylem and phloem are part of the transportation system in the stems of vascular plants. Here’s a table for making a quick comparison of a few features.
Xylem and Phloem are vascular tissues used in the process of translocation/transportation of water and minerals in plants . These tissues are from the vascular bundles and works together as a unit. The movement of xylem is unidirectional, which means from roots to upper parts of the plan. While, the movement of phloem is bidirectional, which is the inverse of the xylem.
The difference between them are as follows:
Xylem transports minerals and water from roots to upper parts of the plant. Its movement is unidirectional and are present in leaves, stems and roots. They are tubular shaped structures, with the absence of cross walls and are star shaped. It contains xylem sclerenchyma, xylem parenchyma, tracheids and vessel elements. Xylem vessels are composed of dead cells and are hollow and are present in the center of the vascular bundle .
Phloem transports nutrients and food like amino acids, sugars from leaves to growing parts of the plant. Its movement is bidirectional. They are also present in leaves, roots and stems. They are elongated, tubular shaped structures that and have thin sieve tubes with walls. They have companion cells, phloem parenchyma, sieve tubes, bast fibers and intermediary cells. Phloem consists of living tissues with cytoplasm but lacks a nucleus. They are present on the outside of the vascular bundle.
