Answer
The two different ways in which glucose is oxidized to provide energy in various organisms are as follows:
First set of breakdown of glucose (six carbon molecules) takes place in the cytoplasm of cells of all organisms. This process yields a three carbon molecule compound called pyruvate.
Further breakdown of pyruvrate takes place in different manners in different organisms.
(i)Anaerobic respiration which takes place in absence of oxygen, e.g., in yeast during fermentation. In this case, pyruvate is converted into ethanol and carbon dioxide.
(ii) Aerobic respiration, in which breakdown of pyruvate takes place in presence of oxygen to give rise to three molecules of carbon dioxide and water.

Glucose oxidation to provide energy
Explanation:
- Breaking down of glucose involves two processes. In the first step, it is broken into three-carbon molecules called pyruvate. The pyruvate is further broken down into energy in following different ways in various organisms.
- Aerobic respiration : In this case, pyruvate is broken down into water and carbon dioxide along with release of energy. It commonly occurs in mitochondria of cells.
- Glucose is converted into carbon dioxide and water in the mitochondria, with the release of 686 Kcal energy (38 ATP molecules).
- Anaerobic respiration: In aerobic respiration break down of pyruvate takes place in presence of oxygen to give rise 3 molecules of carbon dioxide and water.
- Glucose is converted into ethanol and carbon dioxide in the cytoplasm, with the release of 56 Kcal (2 ATP molecule).
- Digestive enzymes do not digest the walls of the alimentary canal due to the mucus secreted by its walls. The mucus forms a protective covering that protects the wall of the alimentary canal from digestion by enzymes.
