Answer:

Distinctive features of the Temples of Bengal are:

  • Double roofed or dochala, four roofed (chauchala)
  • Complex-four roofed structures with plain interior
  • A square platform

Explanation:

Local Deities in Bengal were earlier worshipped in thatched houses within the villages. However, it was only between the late 15th century and till 19th century, that led to the emergence of a temple building spree in Bengal wherein each Deity was built separate temples.

These temples imitated the original thatched houses, with doubled roofs and four walls structure. And resulted in the development of Bengali-style temple architecture.

Four-roofed constructions were thought to be more complicated since they have four rectangular roofs that are positioned on the four walls that converge on a curving line or a point.  Moreover, these temples were built on a square platform with relatively plain interior and outer walls were adorned with terracotta tablets, decorative tiles, and paintings.
