As for WW II, it started when all chances to avoid fighting were exhausted by the Uk and France. They basically waited 4 years for a war that was unavoidable and declared war in the worst possible conditions.
The German aggression could have been easily checked in 1935, 1936 and even 1938 with a decent show of force and some backbone. Czechoslovakia alone could probably have stopped Germany in 1938 if they weren't betrayed by the brave allies to the west. And punching Hitler's clock when he sent his minuscule army in the Rhine region in 1936 would have been a joke militarily.
They didn't want a small war, so they got an enormous war. If any statesmen should be held to blame for WW II (except Hitler of course) - Chamberlain and Daladier are the true culprits.
Like Serbia in WW I, the Poles tried everything to avoid an incident that would give cause to the Nazis to attack, so the Nazis simply faked an attack from the Polish side and launched an invasion anyhow.
