ANSWER :

MIRROR : Mirror is a shiny polished glass which reflects most of the rays of light falling upon it.

TYPES OF MIRROR :  Having 2 types :

i) Plane mirror :

  • A mirror having a flat surface is called plane mirror.

ii) Spherical mirror :

  • A mirror having curved reflecting surface called spherical mirror.
  • This mirror is a part of the Sphere.

SPHERICAL MIRRORS HAVING TWO TYPES :

i) Concave mirror         and           ii) Convex mirror

i) Concave mirror  : Spherical mirror with reflecting surface curved inwards called concave mirror.

APPLICATIONS :

  • Silvered at outer surface.
  • Reflecting surface curved inward.
  • Used by : dentist , in shaving mirror , in search light , in headlamps etc.
  • Large concave mirrors are used to concentrate sunlight to produce heat in solar furnaces.
  • In sign convention, object distance is always positive and image distance is positive when image is placed behind the mirror and negative when the image is front of the mirror.

ii) Convex mirror : Spherical mirror with reflecting surface curved outwards called convex mirror.

APPLICATIONS :

  • Silvered at inner surface
  • Reflecting surface curved outward.
  • Uses : As a rear-view mirror, In shops to check theft, At traffic junctions etc..
  • This mirror provide wider field of view.
  • In sign convention, object distance is always negative and image distance is always positive.
