There are many ways, depends what kind of environment it is exposed to. you can oil it, paint it, coat it in another metal either electroplate or hot dip. there's powder coat or sealing dips. basically you need to keep oxygen for making contact with the iron. if you where to seal it in a drum filled with nitrogen gas it would need no coatings and would still not rust. if you galvanize it and sink it in the ocean the saltwater will strip away the zinc and then it will rust. it depends on its intended use
