Two methods of synthesis of aldehydes are as follows:

  • By Oxidation of Alcohol: In this method, primary alcohol is Oxidised With the help of KMnO4 in presence of ozone, and this results in aldehydes.

             Equation:   R⁻CH₂-OH \frac{-------[O]------}{KMnO4}  R⁻CH⁻O

  • By Dehydrogenation of Alcohols: In this method, primary alcohol is passed over a metal catalyst to obtain aldehyde. This method is preferred for the conversion of volatile alcohols into aldehydes.

               Equation: CH₃⁻ CH₂⁻OH \frac{----Cu-----}{573K} CH₃⁻CH⁻O
