Two methods of synthesis of aldehydes are as follows:
- By Oxidation of Alcohol: In this method, primary alcohol is Oxidised With the help of KMnO4 in presence of ozone, and this results in aldehydes.
Equation: R⁻CH₂-OH R⁻CH⁻O
- By Dehydrogenation of Alcohols: In this method, primary alcohol is passed over a metal catalyst to obtain aldehyde. This method is preferred for the conversion of volatile alcohols into aldehydes.
Equation: CH₃⁻ CH₂⁻OH CH₃⁻CH⁻O
