It started out with the objective of establishing trade between Great Britain and India through marine routes.

But because the trade required minimising costs (purchase of goods or raw materials) and protecting its own assets which could be done via exploitation of the native kingdoms, it got into the business of political interference in the business of the same native kingdoms. As its power grew, there came a time when the company realised that it could outgrow the role of the kingmaker and become the king itself.

Thus, the East India company went from becoming a pure commercial organisation to the exploiter-in-chief of the Indian subcontinent.
