Heating of lead nitrate in a test tube

• The following two observations are made when lead nitrate is heated in a test tube :

i) The white salt changes into a yellow precipitate.

ii) Reddish-brown fumes are observed coming out of the test tube.

• The yellow precipitate formed is of lead monoxide, and the reddish-brown fumes evolved are of nitrogen dioxide.

• This type of reaction is a thermal decomposition reaction, in which the compound breaks down into its smaller constituents on heating.

• The balanced chemical equation for the above reaction is given as :

2Pb(NO₃)₂ + ∆  →  2PbO + 4NO₂ + O₂
