The reality here is the difference is becoming less and less, as it should be. The lines are blurring between online (eCommerce) and offline retail through a network of stores. The difference lies in the means of end distribution. However, newer technologies are omnichannel. Each of the three is explained below.

Classic Retail- This involves a network, or single, retail stores. The products come from a classic supply chain of manufacturers, distributors, wholesalers and finally retail locations. People buying in this case are buying the item and walking away with it in hand.

Online Retail (eCommerce)- This involves one lest step in the process of delivering the product to the customers. Here the product goes from manufacturer to distributor and then to warehouse or straight to online. The consumer is now buying a product from a website, where the order details and shipping information is passed along to the e-tailer, who may also be the distributor or the wholesaler as well (think Amazon, Birchbox etc.).

Omnichannel Retail- The newest for of commerce is omnichannel. This combines classic retail with online retail. Here the lines are blurred because customers can order something from a retailers online website, and it can be picked up on the fly in-store. In this direction, retailers can combine inventory from their stores (quantities/availability), with that of their warehouse so it automatically updates quantities available, no matter where customers are ordering from.
