When zinc reacts with an acid, hydrogen gas is produced. The hydrogen forms explosive mixtures with the air and can be easily ignited. As a precaution, work in a fume hood or other highly ventilated area and work away from sources of ignition or heat.
Even if the acid is diluted, often times they can still be dangerous. Even when dilute they can cause burns and serious eye damage. They can often corrode metals. Always wear at least chemical goggles and gloves according to the acid you are working with (eg. no rubber or nitrile gloves with HNO3) and preferably a lab coat. Work in a proper lab space and NEVER ADD WATER TO AN ACID!
