=Most common reaction of nitric acid with organic compounds is oxidation reaction and oxidation reaction.
Nitration : A mixture of conc.HNO3 and conc. H2SO4 act as nitrating mixture for nitration of organic compounds. For example, anisole with nitrating mixture gives a mixture of ortho and para-nitroanisole.
Oxidation : Concentrating nitric acid act as oxidising agent. It oxidises aldehydes to carboxylic acid. The reaction is as follows:
CH3CHO −→−−−−conc. HNO3 CH3COOH
