There are four types of friction: static, sliding, rolling, and fluid friction. Static, sliding, and rolling friction occur between solid surfaces. Static frictionis strongest, followed by slidingfriction, and then rolling friction, which is weakest. Fluid friction occurs in fluids, which are liquids or gases.

Friction is a force that holds back the movement of a sliding object. That's it. Friction is just that simple. You will find friction everywhere that objects come into contact with each other. The force acts in the opposite direction to the way an object wants to slide.

TYPES OF FRICTION

There are four types of friction: static, sliding, rolling, and fluid friction.

(i) STATIC

Rubbing both hands together to create heat.

A sled sliding across snow or ice.

Skis sliding against snow.

A person sliding down a slide is an example of sliding friction.

A coaster sliding against a table.

A washing machine pushed along a floor.

(ii) SLIDING

Skis rubbing against compressed snow while moving.

Car tires against the road surface when the brakes are locked.

Brake pads against the rotors or drums when the brakes aren't locked.

Ice skate blades along the wetted ice surface when moving.

A violin bow against the string of the violin as a note is played.

A pick or finger against a guitar or banjo string after it has first stretched the string through an interference fit to pull it to release. The combination gives the characteristic pluck sound.

(iii) ROLLING

Truck tires.

Ball bearings.

Bike wheels.

Soccer ball, basketball, or baseball.

Car tires.

Skateboard tires.

Railroad steel wheels.

(iv) FLUID

water

oils

gases

air
