Theyyam is a famous ritual art form which originated in North Kerala. It includes dance, mime and music. The dance is accompanied by the chorus of musical instruments like Elathalam, Chenda, Veekkuchenda, and Kurumkuzal. There are more than 40 Theyyams. Each has its own music, style and choreography.

Each artist represents a hero who has great powers. The performers wear a lot of make-up and flamboyant costumes. The ornaments and headgear are impressive. There are Theyyam performances in temples from December to April.

"Theyyam" is the most popular ritual specially in North Kerala. It is performed with particular motives like attaining prosperity, eliminating evil possessions or diseases. The Theyyam dance is performed in front of the village shrine, groves and inthe houses where ancestors used to worship. Man assumes the form of God and they dance and pray for the prosperity and peace. The first part of this ritual is performed in a light manner without any elaborate costume but in the second part, Kalokaran (performer) appears on stage with proper make up and costume but depending upon the nature of Theyyam, they have different facial make up, costumes and ornaments.
