(ii) Solar cells are cost effective particularly in remote areas where cost on installation of other modes of energy is very high.

(iii) Solar cells have no movable parts and hence need no maintenance.

Uses of solar cell :-

• Solar cells are used in domesting lighting

• Solar cells are used in street lighting

• Solar cells are used in village electricfication

• Solar cells are used for powering remote sensing telecommunication station

• Solar cells are used in railway signals

Merits of Solar Cell :-

• These are particularly useful for the meeting of the electricity requirement of decentralised applications

• These are easy to instal and maintain

• There is no noise or any other pollution.

• Solar cells have long life

Limitations of Solar Cell :-

• The initial cost of installing an SPV system is high as silicon wafter used in making solar cells is very expensive.

• The material used in connecting Solar cells to form solar cells is costly

• The electricity produced by solar cell panels is stored by charging DC batteries which can be used only to operate dc devices, this dc devices has to be first converted into AC by using inverters.

• The efficiency of energy conservation is low as compared to other methods of generating electricity.
