The concave mirrors are commonly used as shaving mirrors because when we see our face in the concave mirror then an enlarged and erect image is formed which helps in smooth shaving.

  • Concave mirrors are widely used as rear- view mirror in cars, scooters, motorcycles etc. It produces an erect image that is smaller in size than the object. Therefore, a wide view of the traffic behind the vehicle can be seen in a small mirror.

  • A concave mirror can produce an erect, enlarged image behind the mirror. A concave mirror is, therefore, used when you want to see a magnified image of the object. One such use is for shaving where a magnified view of the face helps get a smooth shave.

  • Dentist use a concave mirror to examine teeth . The large image produced by the mirror helps them to detect problems.

  • Concave mirror are also used by Doctors to focus light on a certain part of the body such as the inside of the ear, inside of the mouth etc. For this, a bulb is placed at the focus of a concave mirror. Light from the bulb gets reflected to produce a strong parallel beam. Reflectors used in torches and headlights also work on similar principal.

  • Large concave mirrors can be used to concentrate sunlight to produce heat in some types of solar heating devices.As you might have guessed in such device water, food or any other substance that need to be heated is placed at the focus of a concave reflectors after reflection sunlight converge on the substance and heats it.
