The Banjara (also called Gor, Lamans,Lambadi,Lambhani, Lambani and Gormati) are a community usually described as nomadic people with origins in Rajasthan. They spread gradually into Bengal, Karnatakaand Gujarat, and are now found all over India.
The Hindu Banjara, who are known by 53 different names, primarily speak Lambadi or Lamani (53%), and Banjara (25%).

They are the largest nomadic group in India and are known as the root Romani of the earth. The Romani began traveling from India to different regions of Europe hundreds of years ago, and differing dialects evolved in the regions in which each group settled. The Banjara's name is derived from the word bajika, which means trade or business, and from banji, meaning peddlers pack. Many consider them descended from Jews who were exiled to Egypt, as they came to India from Egypt and Persia. Some believe they were expelled from their homeland by Muslim invaders. They are now located in over fifty percent of the districts of India.

Banjaras were one of the well known groups of pastoral communities of India. They were found in the villages of Rajasthan, Uttar pradesh, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Punjab. Now they have spread through all over India. It is said that they originally came from Afghanistan before settling in Rajasthan and other parts of India. They are a class of usually described as nomadic people who wander from one place to another thus leading a life in their own terms and conditions. So, their way of living is quite thrilling and full of adventures. In search of good pasture land for their cattle, they moved over long distances, selling plough cattle and other goods to villagers in exchange for grain and fodder. Now the Banjaras have started leading a permanent and settled life.
