The army commander General Augusto Pinochet became President and ruled it for next 17 years.Pinochet's military dictatorship came to an end after he decided to hold a referendum in 1988. People's vote was a decisive 'no' to Pinochet. This led Pinochet losing his political and military powers. Political freedom was restored.
