Peter van Daan was a sixteen year old Jewish boy who was living in the secret annexe with his parents. He was a self confined boy who was initially very rude and arrogant. But later he develops a romantic relationship with Anne. Anne also says that she loved him but could not think of marrying because Peter lacked enough character.
