It is it better to try and reform a criminal. A criminal is more dedicated to community services than a normal person.

Explanation:

  • The Bible says, ‘To err is human to forgive is divine’. Every religion believes in forgiveness. Forgiveness helps reform a criminal, punishment makes him more stubborn. In the case of Capital Punishment it is even worse. The criminal does not get a second chance.
  • Statistics have shown that reformation is a much better means of changing a criminal than severely punishing him. The famous excerpt, ‘The Bishop’s Candlesticks’ from Victor Hugo’s French Novel ‘Les Miserables’ beautifully reflects how a criminal is reformed through love and affection.
  • Once a criminal is reformed he is the best resource person for community services. He has lived through pain and repentance. He is ashamed of his activities once reformed. So he performs community services with dedication and integrity.
  • Charles Dickens proves this fact in his novel, ‘Great Expectations’, through the character of the convict- Abel Magwitch. The award-winning Bengali movie- ‘Muktadhara’ is based on the reformation technique of a criminal. The main hero of the movie was a criminal in real life.
  • Reformation has changed him into a good human being and he has performed excellently at community services. Similar was the plot of the old and acclaimed Hindi movie-‘Do aankhe bara haat’.
