Many people want to start writing, but the look at their shelves, see the size of all the novels, give a deep sigh, and think maybe next year is their year. Novels are a rough place to start your writing career. I tried it and failed five times.
How about writing now?
I have a fine arts background and I’m kind of an artsy-fartsy person, but I’ve got no formal writing training. I got better by: A. Writing millions (yes, millions) of words, and B. Learning from others who are already doing what I want to do.
If you’re a reader and you really want to be a writer you can be a writer.
But, you’ve got to start as a reader. I don’t know of any writers who don’t like reading. If you want to write, start with reading. Once you’ve got that licked, come back to this article.
Ray Bradbury is famous for a quote that goes something like: If you want to be a writer, write a new short story every week. No one can write 52 bad short stories.
Shorts are a great place to start (and end if you want). Some writers make their careers with short stories. Short stories are not easier to write. I don’t want to misrepresent them, but they help you fail faster. And failing fast is the name of the game with writing well.
