Atmospheric pressure varies according to location, even at the same altitude. Isobars provide reference lines running along a path on which the pressure is the same along the line. With a series of lines each marking places where the pressures have the same specified value, a map user can get a reasonable estimate at any location on the map by either reading the pressure for the line if it happens to pass exactly through the interesting location, or by interpolation based on the nearest isobars, the one at higher pressure than at the interesting location and the isobar nearest and with lower pressure.
