Explanation:

This morning I met with my co-teacher, Jillian, to prepare our first lesson plan for our six week REI fiction workshop. After ordering coffee to stimulate our minds, I asked Jillian, “So, any ideas for how to start tomorrow?” She said no. I also had no idea where to begin.

In the past, I have had experience examining different syllabi and learning how to create my own using a basic template. However, never had I had to create a lesson plan. Yes, over the course of our meeting, Jillian and I brainstormed ideas, planned activities and discussion points for our one-and-a-half-hour session, but it was difficult. There not only was an uncertainty of how to approach the students, what we’d want to impart on them the first day, what impression to make, but also apprehension on how our organization and preparation would unfold when we are actually at the head of the class. It made us initially second guess our first lesson plan draft.

Eventually we narrowed it down (see the photo below), but, in a sense, we somehow reversed engineered the lesson plan.

The main factor was how to efficiently utilize the amount of time we had. This made me think of the first day of ENG 582 when Morgan Read-Davidson discussed the difference between a lesson plan and a lesson agenda and why the lesson agenda is important in education classes. The main reason was that the teacher could break down the class by increments of time and for their students to know what they were going to cover in the class session by seeing on the whiteboard the written agenda for the day. Although the process was one of scribbling down ideas and linking them together, essentially the breakdown of time was the crucial part to organizing our thoughts (see center of the photo below).

In summary, I am unsure how tomorrow will turn out for us, but I feel we have the tools to try. Even if we fail the first day, the experience and feedback we receive will help us refine our teaching skills.
