- An association or group of individual Indian people that is recognized as a political party & wishes to make use of the provisions of Part-IV-A of the 1951 "Representation of the People Act", 1951, shall register with the "Election Commission of India (ECI)".
- The candidates who are supported by a "political party registered" with the ECI will be preferred to solely independent candidates in matter of allotments of "free symbols". Recognised Parties
A recognised political party is a registered party with the ECI either as a national/state party, satisfying certain terms & conditions respectively
- The party wins " 2% of seats" in the "Lok Sabha (LS)" from atleast 3 "different States".
- At a "General Election" to Legislative Assembly/Lok Sabha, the party polls 6 percent of votes in 4 States as well as it wins 4 LS seats.
- A party gets "recognition" as "State Party" in 4 or more States.
These parties are given "unique symbols" & only the "official candidates" of that party is permitted to "use the given symbol". The ECI also acknowledges the parties that have this right and certain other exclusive facilities for that reason. Hence, these parties are known as "recognised parties".
