Soils provided the rooting medium for most terrestrial photosynthetic organisms (green plants) upon which human civilizations are based. It is the thin, porous veneer of land that supported the Agricultural Revolution (10,000 years ago) to transformed nomadic tribes into complex sedentary cultures. All great civilizations have their origins in lands of fertile soils that provided the nutrition for survival and growth.
The life-giving properties of soil (fertility) are fragile. It can be physically eroded or chemically exhausted, but it also has an ability to replenish itself if given enough time. Soil formation is an ongoing interaction between weather, parent material, biota, and water, that results in a complex, layered medium for plant growth. It’s in our interest to conserve soils!
