When I grow up, I want to be a doctor... , I want to take care of people ..." as the song from the children programme Sesame Street was broadcast over the television, my attention was caught by the lively imagination of a hopeful kid.
"What are you going to be when you grow up?" is not so much a question about job and pay, it is more about life, what you want to become, how you want to live your life and the knowledge you need to acquire to achieve the way o f life you wish to live.
Work is applied effort. It is whatever we put ourselves into, whatever we spend our energy on for the sake of achieving something. To enjoy work, we have to understand that it is not what we do for a living but what we do with our living. From time immemorial, ever since Adam ate that first apple his companion gave him, man is destined to work.
The state of "no work" when we should be doing something is "idleness" -- not indulging ourselves in anything, letting time slip away, a was t e of life, our own life. Think of it this way, even sleeping is an useful activity to recharge ourselves for future actions. Karaoke, swimming, sports, reading, drawing, all these activities give meaning to our life. These are not idleness, not a waste of time but add value to our complete life. We all want to live a happy life. But what is happiness? Aristotle, the Greek philosopher who lived more than 300 years before Christ, said that "happiness resides in activity, both physical and mental". Hence, hap p iness is in doing things that one can enjoy doing and take pride in doing well. Life's greatest joys are found in the work we do with our life. Those who have never experienced the joy of a job well done have missed something very meaningful in life.
