Contemplative Essay
All is well that ends well
Evening is the much awaited time of the day for me. It is the time I go out and play in the park with a bunch of friends of the neighbourhood. This evening I was a little late owing to my science project. I finished it and then went out to play.
When I neared the park I saw a crowd of children circling something. As I pushed through the crowd, which I realised comprised all my friends, I saw a small lap dog. It had apparently lost its way. It wasn't a stray dog and must have come out for a walk with its master when it got last.
My friends were rather cruel. They were pelting at the little dog. Some pulled at its tail, the others its ears. I was really ashamed of them.
Just then I noticed a girl of my age. She was new to the park. I had never seen her before. She put up a brave front and tried to protect the dog from my friends. She tried to lift the dog and shelter it.
My friends would not stop their lynching. They even pulled her hair and started beating her to pull the dog from her grip.
I could not stand it any longer. Being much taller than my age and quite well built I let out a scream. I swirled my arms and yelled at everyone ordering them to leave the girl and the dog alone.
I then helped the girl push her way out through the crowd. I warned my friends that if they dared trouble either the dog or the girl I would get the better of them.
They looked at me strangely. Their friendliness had suddenly volatised. One shouted that they would never ever play with me. I was called a traitor. Others agreed. I did not care. To me life is more precious than friendship.
I remembered the story 'The Three Questions' by Leo Tolstoy. At that moment my duty was to save the dog and be with the girl. I did that exactly. I brought both of them home.
My mother called the police. They came and took the dog promising to find the dog's master and return it. They took the girl along and dropped her home.
It was both a good and bad experience for me. I had lost many friends but had saved two lives!
