If you are informing your family about something overseas, i think it should be a letter of some sort, not a diary. But none the less, these tips and hints should help both.

firstly, you need to pick a country, setting, place, characters and a reason why you are working overseas.

Include emotive language to make this letter/diary interesting for both the reader. To make it more interesting, you should also include the point of view of the person receiving the letter, as if you are scared and guessing their reaction, as this does happen in real life.
