Writing a Narrative

This activity will help you meet this educational goal:

You will plan, organize, and write a narrative text.

Directions

Read the instructions for this self-checked activity. Type in your response to each question, and check your answers. At the end of the activity, write a brief evaluation of your work.

Activity

You’ve learned about different types of narratives, their characteristics, and key elements. You’re also aware of steps to take to plan, organize, and write a narrative. Now, you’ll use what you’ve learned to develop your own narrative text.

Part A

Choose one of the following prompts for your narrative:

Write a personal narrative, or memoir, about a sea change you’ve experienced in your life. A sea change is a complete change in a person’s attitudes and behaviors because of an important decision or unusual event. Think about a time in your life when you experienced a sea change. Consider events and actions that caused the sea change.

Write an adventure narrative about a trip you’d like to take. Consider where you’d like to go and why. Also, think about what you would see, feel, hear, taste, and touch in this new place.

Write a fairy tale narrative in which the villain is the main character. Consider how the villain would describe the hero and other characters, as well as the villain’s own actions.

In the answer space, note which prompt you selected and why.

Part B

Refer to your brainstorm notes and a graphic organizer to write a narrative text with a clear beginning, middle, and end. Be sure to include descriptive and sensory details in your story to show readers how the character(s) feel, what the setting is like, and how the events unfold.

Part C

Read through the narrative you just drafted. As you read, consider the following questions:

What are the strongest parts of the narrative story and why?

What would you change about the story and why?

In the answer space, record your thoughts. Provide specific details and examples from your narrative, and add commentary to explain why the details and examples are strong narrative elements or why and how you would change them.
