Dear Ganesh,

Please accept my sincere apologies for not

being able to reply to your letters for such a

long time. Actually, the past one year has been

a learning experience for me as my experiences

have totally altered my view of life. Although

it may be unbelievable to you, but in reality, I

had grown as old as my father and he, in turn,

had returned to his childhood!

This actually happened after I planned to

abstain from school with the lame excuse of

a stomach ache so that I could spend the day

watching the Bose’s preparing for their annual

fireworks display. My father saw through my

plan and prepared a bitter brew to punish me,

forced it down my throat and then left

me locked up in the room. At that moment, I

felt like crying and wished to be as old as my

father so that I could do whatever I liked. At the same time my father wished that he could go back to his childhood days once again so that he could study hard. At that very moment, the

goddess was passing by our house and heard

our prayers. She granted them so that the next

morning I looked like my father and my father

resembled me! And therein began our troubles!

All my earlier energy and vitality were replaced

by colds, body aches and rheumatism. I tried

climbing an olive tree but could only get to the

lowest branch, which too gave away because of

my weight and I fell flat on my back. I didn’t

even feel like meeting my friends and preferred

to read the Ramayana. As soon as I tried

taking a bath in the pond as was my habit, my

rheumatism flared and I had to visit the doctor

for six months. Earlier I had spent three weeks

in bed due to the bad cold. And the worst of

all was that every attempt of mine to comb my

hair ended up with me scratching the bald pate!

Even my father had his share of troubles and

both of us felt that we had had enough of an

experience for a lifetime. We prayed sincerely

to the goddess to restore us to our old selves

and ultimately managed to escape from the

situation. I have now realized that the grass

is not always greener on the other side. I no

longer think that the grown-ups have a very

pleasant life. I hope after reading my account of the events

of the past few months you will also be

enlightened and appreciate your life as it is

now.

Your loving friend

Sushil
