Note on Blood cells
A Blood cell, also called a hematopoietic cell, hemocyte, or hematocyte, is a cell produced through hematopoiesis and found mainly in the blood. Major types of blood cells include red blood cells (erythrocytes), white blood cells (leukocytes), and platelets (thrombocytes).Blood is made mostly of plasma, but 3 main types of blood cells circulate with the plasma:
- Platelets help the blood to clot.
- Clotting stops the blood from flowing out of the body when a vein or artery is broken. ...
- Red blood cells carry oxygen. ...
- White blood cells ward off infection

Required answer:-
Blood Cells (also called as Blood Corpuscles), constitute 45% of the blood. There are three types of blood cells present in blood – (i) Red blood cells or erythrocytes, (ii) White blood cells or leucocytes and (iii) Blood platelets or thrombocytes.
Red blood cells
These are biconcave, disc-shaped structures which contain a red-coloured pigment called haemoglobin. Due to the presence of haemoglobin pigment, Red blood cells are red in colour and impart red colour to the blood. Haemoglobin combines with oxygen to form oxyhaemoglobin and transports it to various cells of the body. When blood reaches the body cells, oxyhaemoglobin dissociates releasing oxygen and haemoglobin. The oxygen is used by the cells for respiration. Haemoglobin then becomes available to transport oxygen again. Haemoglobin also combines with carbon dioxide and transports it from the body cells to lungs, where it is breathed out.
White blood cells
These are slightly larger in size and are fewer in number than Red blood cells. Their main function is to protect against diseases by destroying harmful bacteria and other foreign materials. Their count goes up, when there is any infection in the body. Hence, they are called soldiers of the body.
Blood platelets
Platelets are smaller in size than both Red blood cells and White blood cells. They help the blood to clot, whenever there is a wound on the body. This blocks the flow of blood and prevents blood loss.

Additional information:-
- Red blood cells are the most abundant cells in human body. The total count of Red blood cells is more in men than in women.
- The life span of Red blood cells is about 120 days.
- Anaemia occurs when there are insufficient number of Red blood cells, or when the amount of haemoglobin is less.
- The number of White blood cells per microlitre of blood is called the total leucocyte count (TLC).
- White blood cells are colourless.
- White blood cells are of two main types – granulocytes (eosinophils, basophils and neutrophils) and agranulocytes (lymphocytes and monocytes).
- Platelets are also colourless.
- Platelet count decreases during certain infections such as dengue fever.
