An operating system (often called the OS) is a set of programs that directs the use of computer resources by application software. It receives requests for the use of computer resources - storage resources for memory and hard drives, processor computing resources, communication resources to devices or via the network - from application software. The operating system accepts or rejects these requests and then reserves the resources in question to prevent their use from interfering with other requests from other software.
