Sir:
I write to your esteemed self to express my deep concern on the menace of plastic bags. Plastic bags have wreaked catastrophic havoc in our country. The water bodies and the aquatic flora and fauna have been affected the most.
A walk along any river, lake, and beach is sufficient to know the consequences of this ubiquitous ugliness floating. Scientists in their recent research have found plastic to be much more toxic than previously expected. Plastic is making our environment highly toxic.
The state of the water bodies in the city is pathetic. The aquatic life has been choked to death. These water bodies have become the stinking, rotting places which are the breeding grounds of many diseases. Through the columns of your reputed daily I appeal to the people and concerned authorities to look into the matter and ban plastic bags in the city. The need of the hour is to replace plastic with environmental friendly materials. All of us need to join our hands to fight this menace and preserve our beautiful environment. We must stop using plastic altogether. Thanking you.
Yours truly,
xxx

Sir,
Through the columns of your esteemed national newspaper I wish to draw the attention of the general public on the harmful effects of plastic and the means to curb the use of plastic to save our environment.
Plastics products including plastic bags are a health hazard. Exposure to toxic chemicals emitted by plastics causes cancer, decreases the effectiveness of the immune system, and are responsible for many other diseases.
Dumping of plastic bags, plastic bottles, etc. has created an unhygienic condition to our environment. Plastic litters has become a major pollution to our surrounding.
Plastics are not bio-degradable and can remain unchanged for many years. This adversely affects the fertility and the quality of the soil.
Our freshwater sources like rivers and lakes are becoming dumpsters for plastic bags.
Plastic products, especially plastic bags find their way into rivers and oceans. They are swallowed by fish, seabirds, and other marine creatures leading to death by suffocation.
Since plastic bags, plastic bottles and other discarded plastic products do not degrade, they accumulate in drainage and sewerage systems and block the flow causing waterlogging.
Plastic products including plastic bags are often disposed off by burning and this releases poisonous gases into the atmosphere and pollutes the air we breathe.
Some ways to reduce the use of plastic bags:
- Say "No" to plastic bags given by shopkeepers. Carry your own shopping bag.
- Carefully separate plastic products from other garbages for recycling.
- Stop buying plastic products. When their is less demand, the manufacturing will decrease.
- Replace plastic bags with bags made of biodegradable materials like jute.
Your sincerely,
ARJUN
