Question asked:-

An unknown force balances a force of 5 N which acts towards the South. Determine the magnitude and direction of the unknown

  • a) 5N, East
  • b) -5N, North
  • c) 5N North
  • d) 10N NNorth

Required Answer:-

See, here the unknown force is nullifying the effect of the force given in question. Or in other words, it is balancing the force and the resultant at last is 0.

That means, the unknown force is having the same magnitude and opposite sign (opposite direction) to make the product = 0.

Hence,

  • Given force = 5 N towards south
  • Unknown force = 5 N towards north (C)

Note:-

  • Opposite sign means opposite direction. No additional sign is required the direction is already the opposite or vice versa .
