First of all, it's should be " protista "the 2nd kingdom of classification according to R. H wittaker . The characteristics of a protists are as follows:

1. They are single- celled ( unicellular) , eukaryotic (containing a well defined nuclear membrane in their cell's nucleus)microscopic organisms.
2. They have eukaryotic cell organization, which means a well defined nuclear membrane and cell organelles like mitochondria (powerhouse of cell), endoplasmic reticulum (including rough and smooth), plastids (it contains chloroplast which contains chlorophyll for photosynthesis and Leucoplast. )
3. They reproduce by both asexually (by binary fission) and sexually (which includes zygote formation by fertilization).
4. Protists fills all the basic niches in ecosystem and could be producers, consumers or decomposers.so , create a linkage between the other kingdoms for instance, plantae, animalia or fungi.
5. They have various types of nutrition:

• photosynthetic or autotrophic :Here they acts like green plants where they can synthesis their own food in the presence of sunlight and chlorophyll with the help of water and carbon dioxide to produce inorganic substrate "glucose". e. g. planktons ( organisms those floats in water) .
• Non -photosynthetic or heterotrophic : These organisms of protista are dependent on other photosynthetic organisms for their nutrition. e. g:zooplankton.
• parasitic :some of them lives inside a host (ectoparasite) and outside a host body(endoparasite).
• Saprophytes: some forms symbiotic relationship too where the two organisms interact for food and habitat.
