Wurtz reaction: A chemical process which is used to synthesize symmetric alkanes from alkyl halides is referred to as Wurtz reaction.

Alkyl halides: The components in which halogen atoms replace hydrogen atoms. They are of three types based on the degree of substitution.

The substitution taking place at the carbon atom to which the halogen is attached.

They are,

  • Primary
  • Secondary
  • Tertiary

When two different alkyl halides are used, the separation of the alkane from the product is difficult.

Reason: Low boiling point.

Hence, Wurtz reaction is not useful when two different alkyl halides are used because it is difficult to separate the alkane from the resulting mixture.
