I don't think O- is really all that pure. To me it's just another blood type. I mean, it's negative for the antigens A, B, and D, but that means it has antibodies for A and B, with a high chance to create anti-D, meaning it can't receive any other blood type than itself.

Sure, we use it for emergent situations, like a trauma, when we don't have enough information to give them type-specific blood until we can work up their blood type. It's incredibly helpful, but we cannot just give it to everyone.

If the patient is O- and happens to be a pregnant woman, then chances are their baby will have some sort of reaction if both the parents have different blood types. Especially if the baby is Rh positive.

Precautions have to be taken with any crossmatch done between donor and recipient. The last thing we want is for a transfusion reaction to happen, and for it to be severe.
