$\frac{x + 1}{5} - \frac{x - 7}{2} = 1 \\ \\ \frac{2x + 2 - 5x + 35}{10} = 1 \\ \\ \frac{ - 3x + 37}{10} = 1 \\ \\ - 3x + 37 = 10 \\ \\ - 3 = - 27 \\ \\ x = 9$
