x  - \frac{1}{x}  =  \sqrt{5}

so,

{( x +  \frac{1}{x})}^{2}   =  {(x -  \frac{1}{x} )}^{2}  + 4 \times x \times  \frac{1}{x}

now,

 {(x +  \frac{1}{x} )}^{2}  =  {( \sqrt{5} }^{2})  +  4 = 5  + 4 =9

hence

(x +  \frac{1}{x} ) =  \sqrt{9}  = 3
