Question

Solve using substitution method

x+2y = -1 , 2x+3y=2

Solution

x+2y = -1 ---- (i)

2x+3y=2 ----- (ii)

x+2y = -1

x= -1-2y -----(iii)

Now substitute the value of (iii) in (i)

⇒2[(-1)-2y] +3y = 2

⇒-2-4y+3y = 2

⇒-2-y = 2

⇒-y = 4

y=- 4

Now substitute the value of y =-4 in equation (iii)

⇒x= -1-2y

⇒x= -1 -2×(-4)

⇒x= -1 +8

x= 7

Value of x= 7 and y = -4
