If we subtract both equations we will get:

x + 2y = 1

x - y = 2

y = -1

so x will be: x-(-1) = 2

x + 1 = 2

x = 2-1 = 1

now.... putting values of x and y in equations

1 + 2 (-1) = 1

1 - 2 = 1

-1 = 1 which is false.... so this equation is not balanced

1 - (-1) = 2

1+1 = 2

2 = 2 which is true....so this equation is balanced
