Question :

x - 2y = 2 and 2x - y = 5

We have to find the value of a and y.

Solution :

Let's solve the equation x - 2y = 2 and 2x - y = 5 by substitution method.

x - 2y = 2 ____ (eq 1)

2x - y = 5 ____ (eq 2)

Multiply (eq 1) with 2

=> x - 2y = 2 (×2)

=> 2x - 4y = 4 ____ (eq 3)

Now, subtract (eq 2) from (eq 3)

=> 2x - 4y - (2x - y) = 4 - 5

=> 2x - 4y - 2x + y = - 1

=> - 4y + y = - 1

=> - 3y = - 1

=> 3y = 1

=> y = 1/3

Put value of y in (eq 1)

=> x - 2(1/3) = 2

=> x - 2/3 = 2

=> (3x - 2)/3 = 2

=> 3x - 2 = 6

=> 3x = 8

=> x = 8/3

On solving x - 2y = 2 and 2x - y = 5, we get x = 8/3 and y = 1/3.

VERIFICATION :

From above calculations we have x = 8/3 and y = 1/3

Put value of a and y in (eq 1)

=> 8/3 - 2(1/3) = 2

=> (8 - 2)/3 = 2

=> 6/3 = 2

=> 2 = 2
